The Best Single Player PC Games: Top 15 Of All Time

Year after year, gamers debate over which games are the best single player pc games. However, there are a few elite games that suffer no sane opposition.

It's way past midnight, and you're still at it. You sit at your computer, eyes red, teeth clenched, clicking away at your keyboard and mouse. The single player PC games suck us out of our reality and into another world. We become one with our avatars as we struggle to solve problems or beat tough bosses.

PC gamers invest big money into their gaming systems. They often build their own systems, carefully choosing components that will maximize their gaming experience. We then can spend hours putting everything together, suffering countless hardware and software setbacks along the way. But, all that hard work pays off when you're running your game smoothly at maximum settings. PC gamers are a special breed who can especially appreciate the hard work developers put into the best single player PC games.

That's one reason why the best single player PC games never go out of fashion. PC gamers will revisit classics if for no other reason than to see how they look on a newer graphics card. They are loyal and passionate about gaming and desire only the most transformative virtual experiences. These experiences are what set the best single player PC games apart from the thousands of forgettable titles.

Comparison Table

What Qualifies a Game to Be Among the Best Single Player PC Games?

Not just any game can call itself one of the best single player PC games. Only a privileged few out of thousands manage to pull off this feat. Many games are second-rate copycats seeking to piggyback off the success of a great title. However, that is not to say that a great game has to be completely original. Some of the greatest games take familiar concepts and add just a little something special. Other games blow us away with thoughts and ideas we've never imagined.

The best single player PC games make us invest our emotions into characters and their struggles. These are often the ones gamers cherish the most. Once a game combines excellent dialog, a well-written story, and fun action you might find yourself in a call-off-work situation. However, there are measurable factors that go into making the best single player PC games. First is gameplay. No matter how great your story idea may be, without a playable game, you might as well publish a book. Great games make the players forget the controls are a part of the game and every movement becomes instinct.

The difficulty is another factor in designing a great game. Game designers often struggle to find the perfect balance between too easy and too hard. If a game's too hard, you may give up, uninstall, and call it a day. But, if the game's too easy, you may grow bored, beat it quickly, or abandon it for something more challenging. Lastly, player feedback can let designers know if they are on the right track when designing the best single player PC games.

How We Picked the Games

Finding the best single player PC games was no simple process. There are probably dozens of other titles that are worthy of being on this list. However, we tried to focus on games that offered the player new and unique experiences. We also thought of groundbreaking titles that forever changed their genres.

Our research took us across numerous PC gaming articles, forums, social media pages, and videos. We then compared user and critic ratings to find what we believe are the representations of the best single player PC games ever created.

Of course, a list of the best single player PC games is going to be at least somewhat subjective. However, a significant number of games on our list won numerous awards and accolades from gamers and industry experts. Therefore, we feel confident that PC gamers will agree with most if not all of your picks.

Finally, we also wanted to keep our list somewhat balanced. Given the popularity of First Person Shooter (FPS) games we tried to limit that genre's representation. However, most of the best games were action-based titles. That said, we offer Minecraft fans our sincerest apologies in advance.

Here Are Our Top 15 Picks for the Best Single Player PC Games

These are what we believe to be the top 15 best single player PC games ever designed. This list includes classic titles such as Deus Ex and Silent Hill 2. We also added more recent games, like Witcher 3 and one of the latest incarnations of Doom. The prices for these games range from $1 to $300, and they are compatible with Windows 10. Some games, however, may not be compatible with specific system configurations. Older graphics cards, for example, may not be able to run games like Witcher 3. Be sure to check the game's requirements before you make your purchase.

The Doom PC franchise began in 1993 with the release of Doom, an FPS (First Person Shooter) game in which the player controlled a nameless space marine trapped in a dungeon battling creatures from hell. Over the next 23 years, id Software released several sequels and one movie starring the Rock and Karl Urban. The older titles relied on creepy atmospherics and jump scares to deliver the tension, but as time went on, the games evolved beyond mindless run and gun. And in 2016, they re-launched the iconic title by introducing some mind-blowing visuals, great graphics, solid gameplay, and most importantly, a fantastic storyline.

You're Doom-ed

In the story, the Union Aerospace Corporation's Mars facility has gone silent. You play as a battle-hardened space marine, nicknamed Doomguy (just go with it), sent to investigate the mysterious facility. Once there you discover that the place is crawling with evil, grotesque demons from hell. Apparently, someone at the Aerospace Corporation had the bright idea of harnessing the power of hell to use as an unlimited commercial energy source. Predictably, things go awry leading to all kinds of demonic blood-soaked hijinks. Now it's up to Doomguy and his trusty ultimate supergun the BFG 9000 (We'll leave the acronym up to your imagination) to save the day and prevent hell from invading the universe.

The gameplay also features several explicit cinematic death-kill animations in which Doomguy dispatches demons in creatively violent fashion. Because sometimes you just have to get a little up close and personal with your demon killing, am I right?

Doom won "Game Of The Year" awards from various gaming sites such as Polygon, Shacknews, and Gameerpros. According to IMDb, in 2017 Doom was nominated for 15 gaming awards, winning 9. The game seamlessly mixes the survival horror and FPS genres without sacrificing action or story development.

One of the best single player PC games of all time, the 2016 incarnation of Doom continues to keep many gamers up all night, and not necessarily because they were playing it. Doom, which is available used in CD format and on digital gaming platforms like STEAM, costs from $ to $$.

Before Doom, Wolfenstein was the king of the PC FPS mountain. First released in 1981 under the title "Castle Wolfenstein," the game was originally a somewhat forgettable adventure game where you controlled an unarmed American prisoner who manages to steal secret plans out of a Nazi castle and must now escape. The original game involved a lot of stealth with some occasional action as the character would at times need to disarm and kill Nazi guards.

However, in 1992 the franchise underwent a dramatic re-invention and became one of the most beloved FPS shooters of all time. In this incarnation, the Nazis capture an American spy named William "B.J" Blazkowicz. He was sent to sabotage and foil the Nazi's schemes, but they caught him and sent him to Castle Wolfenstein. Once there, your character manages to take out a prison guard and goes on a bloody rampage through many subterranean floors of the castle. He fights his way through tons of Nazis to uncover the truth behind "Operation Eisenfaust" and stop it. Gamers often credit Wolfenstein for popularizing the FPS genre, which currently dominates the PC gaming market.

After a few sequels, the franchise was re-booted with the release of the 2014 reboot Wolfenstein: The New Order. In New Order, the Nazis won WWII and took over the world in an alternate timeline. Now, only B.J. can set things right. It also won Best Nordic Game at the 2015 Nordic Game Awards and the Big Apple Award for Best Game at the 2015 New York Videogame Awards. This game is primarily available on digital gaming platforms like STEAM, although you may find some used disks of the game on sites like eBay. Grand Theft Auto 5, also known as GTA 5, was released in 2015 for the PC. The story follows the criminal misadventures of Michael, a middle-aged former bank robber. Michael walks away from a blood-soaked score of a lifetime only to find himself years later stuck in a loveless marriage and on the brink of financial ruin. The story also follows Franklin, a morally-conflicted young hoodlum willing to commit any crime for some fast cash. Michael and Franklin eventually meet and start plotting criminal schemes. However, what Michael doesn't know is that his former colleague Trevor is alive and well, and wants to settle the score. The game allows you to play as all three characters as you wreak chaos across the expansive world of San Santos (based on Los Angeles, California).

GTA 5 follows the proud Grand Theft Auto tradition of allowing the player to roam a completely open-world environment where you can steal any car, and violently attack any character you see fit. The insane amount of chaos and destruction you can accomplish within five minutes is pretty mind-blowing. The player must avoid the police, who'll hunt you down with increasing force based on the amount of violence and destruction you cause. The game contains lots of coarse language and witty dialog between the various eccentric characters.

GTA 5 earned numerous industry awards and nominations including Spike Video Game Awards Game of the Year in 2013. Half-Life 2, released in 2004, is the sequel to 1998's critically acclaimed FPS shooter Half-Life. Half-Life 2 picks up where the events of the first game left off. The protagonist Dr. Gordon Freeman wakes up on a train headed to an Orwellian urbanscape called City-17. In the city, Dr. Breen, the former Director of the Black Mesa, New Mexico facility, appears to be in control. Throughout the city, you see Dr. Breen delivering mind-numbing propaganda speeches via mass projection screens reminiscent of 1984. Freedman must fight his way through nightmarish creatures and countless soldiers to stop the mad doctor before he completes his mysterious objective.

Half-Life 2 introduced the use of the Havoc licensed physics engine which allows players to manipulate their environment like never before. This engine also gave Valve (the game's developer) a chance to introduce some new hair-pulling puzzles for players to solve. In the game, Freedman utilizes various traditional firearms, but one of the most fun weapons is the gravity gun. This weapon not only allows you to manipulate objects to solve puzzles but also attack your enemies.

Despite its aged-graphics, Half-Life 2 remains one of the all-time best single player PC games. This timeless classic is a unique blend of great storytelling, fun combat, and puzzle solving unmatched by any game of the genre.

From 2003 to 2005, Half-Life 2 earned multiple nominations and industry awards. However, the government decides to set him free to go on what amounts to a suicide mission. Fenix joins along with members of his old Delta Squad to do battle with the monstrous creatures.

What makes Gears of War fun to play is the real-time tactical chess you have to play to defeat your enemies. Unlike many games of its genre, you can't just run around blasting aliens. The player must utilize tactics such as using cover and covering fire as the enemy employs the same strategies. 15. Silent Hill 2

The final entry in our list of the best single player PC games is Silent Hill 2, released for PC in 2002. In the game, you play as James Sunderland, a depressed man who one day receives a letter signed by his wife. Typically, this would seem like welcome news, except in this case James' wife Mary died three years ago. In her letter, Mary writes, "Silent Hill, our sanctuary of memories...I will be waiting for you there." James then sets off on a journey to find his wife in the mysterious town of Silent Hill, which is not on any map.

Once there, James finds a deserted ghost town plagued by a mysterious white fog. As he wanders past the cemetery, he soon realizes he's not alone. The city hosts bizarre creatures intent on tearing him apart. To survive, James must find supplies and weapons to ward off the monsters. Then there is the eerie siren that transforms the already creepy town into even more nightmarish hellscape filled with unimaginable horrors. One of those horrors is a creature known as pyramid-head, who has a giant metal oversized pyramid on his head and drags around a massive rusty sword. Silent Hill 2 lives on as one of the most deeply disturbing games ever made.

Silent Hill 2 for the PC is ultra-rare. Unfortunately, the game isn't currently available on any digital platform. However, used CD Versions are out there and can cost from $100 to $300. Also, fans of the game created an "Enhanced Edition," which isn't the game itself but rather a MOD released in 2018. You can install this MOD in your installed version, and it updates aspects of the game's graphics.
